Barjac
Renaissance village
Barjac is a small village established on a plateau of the plateau at an altitude of 170m. Located between Cèze and Ardèche, halfway between Aubenas and Pont-Saint-Esprit, in this picturesque region of the gorges, the last stage of the Pays d'Uzès, locking the gate of Bas-Vivarais, at the limit of the foothills of the Cévennes. Like so many other prosperous cities in the Middle Ages, it agglutinates around its castles, dominating the Barjac Basin, a natural corridor between greenhouses with a Hellenic profile and the Garrigues peneplain with metallic green foliage of shivering eyes in the blast of the mistral.
Horseshoe open on the Cèze, the territory of Barjac has seen all the Marche du Sud civilizations sit at the ageless crossroads, descending from the Cévennes mountains towards the Rhône and the coastal plain, its land shaped by a rare force, has left its mark on it in a mysterious connivance.

Discovered in 1994, the Chauvet Cave is a cave decorated with prehistoric drawings dating back over 36,000 years.
With its 425 drawings and paintings, including exceptional animal frescoes (twice as old as Lascaux!), The Chauvet Cave is the oldest evidence of art in Humanity.
It was listed in 2014 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you have time, go in the scents of thyme, wild thyme, lavender “aspic”, through its woods of holm oaks, cedars, boxwood, broom and junipers, arbutus, little holly and even wild asparagus forming this garrigue. On other less calcareous grounds also pushes the heather, the cistus with white or pink flowers, the large ferns where the oak is next to the chestnut, the walnut and the pine.
